Richard Heiser
Richard Heiser considers himself a folk potter as well as a clay artist, making both utilitarian pots and whimsical sculptural items. His inspirations come from many different places, mostly from conspiring with friends, students, and other potters. Never stop learning, listening, questioning or observing.
His studio is located in Castle Hayne where he uses a variety of firing techniques. Firing with wood has its challenges – the process is intense, the human energy required can be taxing, but it is ultimately the bringing together of all natural elements; fire, earth, water and air to produce finished pots.
Richard established his pottery in 2006, built the wood fired kiln in 2007 and has continued to operate the business full time since 2009. His education includes an MFA in Ceramics from East Carolina University and a BFA from Western Carolina University as well as a lot of trying and discovering.
